In January 2024, it was announced that all work on the planned tidal barrier for Lowestoft was to be halted.

Our questions about this decision took us to Westminster in April and what emerged from our meeting there is a picture of abandonment of some 500 communities at risk of flooding who have had their planned defences cancelled by DEFRA due to them failing a government ‘metric’ that assesses whether or not they are worth protecting. The metric itself is opaque and so far there has been no formal announcement of who the other 499 affected communites are.
